Bryan C. Shartle is a Co-Managing Partner of Sessions, Israel & Shartle, LLC and helps oversee the strategy, operations, and continued growth of the firm’s 11 offices nationwide. He also plays a leadership role in the firm’s Consumer Defense, Bankruptcy, Commercial Litigation, and Appellate Practice Sections, with a practice focused heavily on complex disputes affecting the financial services industry.

Bryan has substantial appellate experience and has represented clients before nine of the 13 federal circuit courts of appeals, as well as before the U.S. Supreme Court. His appellate work often arises from significant consumer, bankruptcy, commercial, and regulatory disputes and complements a broader litigation practice in which he regularly handles matters involving substantial financial and industry-wide implications.

A significant part of Bryan’s practice involves defending financial services companies, including collection agencies, creditors, banks, debt buyers, student loan servicers, and businesses subject to telemarketing regulation. He has extensive experience with litigation under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, Telephone Consumer Protection Act, Fair Credit Reporting Act, and numerous state consumer protection laws, acting in individual claims, class actions, arbitrations, and other complex proceedings.

Beyond litigation and appeals, Bryan advises clients on regulatory compliance, licensing, employment, bankruptcy, and related commercial matters. His work has included CFPB readiness assessments and enforcement matters, and he regularly counsels financial services businesses on regulatory and operational issues that intersect with potential litigation risk.

Bryan is a frequent speaker and author on financial services litigation and regulatory issues and regularly presents for ACA International and RMA International. He serves on the Legal Advisory Board for the Consumer Relations Consortium and has been retained by industry organizations in litigation addressing significant issues affecting their members. His work has also been recognized by Best Lawyers and Lawyers of Distinction.

Sessions, Israel & Shartle, LLC has an established Appellate Practice representing clients before the U.S. Supreme Court, every federal circuit court of appeals, and numerous state appellate courts. The team handles a broad range of appellate matters and has contributed to precedent-setting decisions across multiple jurisdictions.

The practice is led by Bryan Shartle, David Clouston, and Dayle Van Hoose and draws on lawyers with substantial experience in the distinct demands of appellate advocacy. The team focuses on the legal analysis, written advocacy, and strategic judgment required at the appellate level, recognizing that appeals call for a different approach from trial litigation.

Several of the firm’s appellate lawyers previously served as clerks to appellate judges, including state supreme court justices, and members of the team have also taught appellate advocacy at law schools. This combination of practical and academic experience gives the practice additional insight into appellate decision-making and the presentation of complex legal issues.
