Karen Beach is a Principal Attorney with TNMD, a leading Michigan boutique law firm dedicated exclusively to defending medical malpractice claims and appellate law.

Ms. Beach’s appellate practice focuses on medical malpractice appeals, but also includes attorney malpractice, products liability, no-fault, commercial litigation, real property, general liability, civil rights, municipal liability, accounting malpractice, and family law. She has experience litigating post-trial motions and appeals of multi-million dollar over-limits verdicts, including appellate stays and bonds, and settlement negotiations.

Ms. Beach has been lead appellate counsel in over 50 cases in the Michigan state and federal courts, including two oral arguments before the Michigan Supreme Court. She has obtained interlocutory review in over 60% of her applications for leave to appeal to the Court of Appeals, reflecting her skill in persuading the Court of the need for immediate appellate review of critical issues.

Ms. Beach started her appellate career at Duke University School of Law, where her moot court team was named National Champion at the 2011 ABA Appellate Advocacy Competition. She developed her practice as part of the appellate group at one of the Midwest’s oldest and largest law firms. She was recruited in 2019 to lead the appellate department of another large Michigan defense firm, before joining TNMD in 2021 as the chair of its appellate department.

Appellate lawyers are integrated into each team at TNMD, lending their insights and expertise at all stages of the case. They provide legal research on critical issues, prepare dispositive motions, and make sure that potential appellate issues are fully preserved should an appeal be necessary. At trial, they are available to monitor proceedings and assist the trial attorneys with on-demand motions and research, as well as with drafting jury instructions and verdict forms. After trial, they handle post-trial motions and prosecute or defend appeals in the Michigan Court of Appeals and Supreme Court.

Our attorneys are successful in obtaining interlocutory appellate review of important trial court rulings while the case is still pending before the trial court. This includes rulings related to discovery, expert witnesses, statute of limitations and pre-suit filing requirements, and denials of dispositive motions.  Strategic interlocutory appeals can create significant leverage for settlement.

We have experience with appeals from multi-million dollar verdicts and over-limits verdicts. Our appellate experience extends beyond medical malpractice law to include general liability, insurance defense, commercial litigation, employment law, and other kinds of professional negligence. Retaining a dedicated appellate lawyer sends a clear message that the case isn’t over, and will be vigorously and expertly prosecuted through the appellate courts.
